Stories of Our Certified WBEs Meet Cheryl R. Mitchell, Ph.D. of Creative
Research Management In 2000,
Dr. Cheryl R. Mitchell, embarked on the formation of her new and solely owned company,
Creative Research Management (CRM), headquartered in Creative
Research Management is housed in a modern 26,000 square foot facility that
includes laboratories, offices, and pilot plants where Dr. Mitchell and her
staff conduct independent expert scientific research as well as product and
process development. Less than two years after buying the laboratory building,
a 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing plant was added in which raw materials like
organic tapioca starch and whole brown rice are processed into ingredients that
are sold to other food and beverage manufacturers. Dr.
Mitchell’s particular expertise in creating novel ingredients and processes as
an approach to solving product development problems has led to the development
of rice, pectin, and inulin ingredients that are utilized in over 300 products
currently being marketed throughout the Being the
president and sole owner of CRM, as well as certified by NWBOC, has proved to
be a valuable asset when approaching Fortune 100 companies that have a
responsibility to include minority owned and operated businesses in their
portfolios of vendor companies. Dr. Mitchell says, “The Certificate gives us
the added ‘moment of consideration’ necessary for us to further explain and
describe the ground-breaking significance of our ingredients. That additional ‘moment of
consideration’ is priceless!” For more
information on Dr. Mitchell and CRM, visit www.crmcorp.net/cms. Marketing Tips Tips for your NWBOC WBE certification Pre-selling and Competition In buying services and solutions, buyers need to meet with
vendors to determine the intangible aspects of what they are buying including
feature, benefit, and risks. Pre-selling ahead of a contact award is the rule
rather than the exception in the solutions market. The level of competition in the federal solutions market
depends on the number of vendors pre-selling the opportunity. It also depends heavily on whether there is
an incumbent contractor or the buy is a new opportunity. Federal purchases of
commodity products tend to be less competitive than similar purchases in the
commercial sector. End users and contracting officers focus more on obtaining
bids from several vendors than on getting the lowest price. The federal market
is not profit driven and federal rules do not always benefit the lowest bidder. Contract bundling reduces competitiveness dramatically. What
does a contracting organization do when it is understaffed? It bundles and gets
everything done in one fell swoop. Procurements addressing new issues and
existing contracts can be combined into one large procurement opportunity and
contracted through a public bid or a multi-vendor contract. NWBOC
