NWBOC on MSNBC NWBOC President, Janet Harris-Lange will appear on MSNBC morning show "Your Business" on Sunday, September 7 at 7:30 a.m. EST to discuss certification in general for women-owned businesses. The episode will re-air the following Saturday, September 13 at 5:30 a.m. EST. Beginning Monday, September 8, view the segment at http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13561213/.
"Obtaining WBE certification is an important business development strategy for business owners in general and particularly for women business owners," said Harris-Lange. "With women-owned firms accounting for 41% of all privately held firms, having WBE certification is the only way purchasing agents have confidence that a business representing itself as woman-owned is in fact woman-owned."

Ramberg focuses exclusively on America's small business entrepreneurs, and is the place to go for news, advice, guidance and tips for small business owners. Each week, "Your Business" presents a profile of a small business owner, highlighting both the challenges and successes they have each faced. Success Stories of Our Certified WBEs
Meet Nicole Kobey, founder of Marilyn's Fresh Foods
In June of 1996, Nicole Kobey started Marilyn's Fresh Foods. Since 1987, her parent's owned restaurants throughout Arizona--making the food industry a part of her life from an early age. After graduating college she moved to Los Angeles to work with a product placement company. Melancholy for family, her daily calls to her parents led her father to one day pose the question, why don't you do something with Marilyn's? From that idea she returned to Arizona and began exhibiting Marilyn's goods to all the specialty markets in Arizona. She started with bulk-placement in delis and then progressed to pre-packaging items. Before she knew it, she was waking up at 4 am to deliver chips, salsa, and spinach con queso with many other restaurant specialties to all of the stores around town.
Today, Nicole is busy doing everything from sales calls to bookkeeping. She designs packaging, brainstorms new products, creates marketing and promotional campaigns and on occasion drives the truck that delivers Marilyn's food.
Nicole gives much praise to her NWBOC certification which has supported and enabled Marilyn's to join the supplier diversity team with large companies like Supervalu and Kroger. In the coming months, Nicole hopes to introduce a line of frozen entrees and expand their line of organic snacks.
Marilyn's Fresh Foods has locations in Arizona and California with clients all over the United States. To learn more, visit www.marilynsfreshfoods.com.
Meet Tonia Deal, President of Tonia Deal Consultants, Inc.
Tonia Deal has always been a very active person and started working at a very young age. At 16, she went into a temp agency and was hired as a file clerk making $5.50 an hour. A nationwide recruiting firm headquartered in Akron, Ohio owned the agency, and this is where her future in recruiting began.
On January 1, 1993 Deal opened the doors to Tonia Deal Consultants, Inc. in Hudson Ohio. She was referred to Navistar International out of Chicago and accepted a search for a Director of Purchasing. Within a couple of months she had spoken to over 300 individuals from the Big Three Auto players. She ended up recruiting a candidate from Ford and subsequently placed over 70 key individuals within Navistar.
Deal is the sole owner of her firm and a member of ISM, APICS, ASQ, and several other supply chain organizations. She has been published several times over the years in Purchasing Magazine and most recently was asked to join the Board of Directors for Akron University. She has a database of over 7,000 candidates worldwide.
Since the company began, Tonia Deal Consultants has had clients in all industries including American Airlines, Royal Caribbean Cruise Lines, Goodyear Tire & Rubber, Honda, Ryerson Steel, Rolls Royce, Electrolux, Moen, Lord Corporation, IndyMac Bank, Ebay, and the list goes on. The commonality is all within purchasing and global supply chain management. Deal has recruited for positions based in China, Taiwan, Singapore, and Europe. Still a vast amount of her recruiting is done in North America.
Certification by NWBOC has helped Deal's company out quite a bit over the past few years. "Initially it's a little like buying a house," said Deal. "They need information and more information and you think it's never going to happen. It was definitely worth the wait. My clientele is very happy about it because my firm now falls under the supplier diversity category."
